New Labour New Danger

December 12th 2006 | Posted by Chris Palmer

Always cause for concern is when members of Conservative Future or the Conservative party state (somehow as if it is given fact) that Tony Blair has been “a bloody good Prime Minister.” Clearly they haven’t been paying any attention whatsoever these past ten years.

In 1994 Tony Blair arose as a fresh faced grinning Cheshire-cat to become the leader of the Labour party. The circumstances of his rise to lead the party and eventually the country are certainly debatable. Journalist Melanie Philips believes that Blair’s appeal was his emphasis on socially conservative policy, while some other commentators put Blair’s rise down to factors such as the collapse of a Conservative party mired under allegations of sleaze and incompetence. In truth, Tony Blair and Labour winning the 1997 was probably a combination of many factors, however, a Government should always be judged upon its record in office – not on what it said in getting there, as an opposition can say anything they like since they have no responsibilities (and some, like the Lib Dems, will never have any.)

Admission Impossible?

December 9th 2006 | Posted by Chris Palmer

As some students in Bath may have noticed way back in October, there was a small Student march called Admission Impossible that took place in London near the Houses of Parliament which was promoted and run by the NUS (National Union of Students – reads National Union of Socialists.) The aim of the march was to highlight the supposed unfairness of the £3,000 ‘top-up’ University tuition fees that apparently make it impossible for many people to attend higher education.

Attendance of the event by students from Bath University was, from what I am told, pretty dismal compared with the size of the whole campus and general Bath student population. Participants included those from the NUS, the usual assortment of lefties, rebellious students prepared to go on any march simply because it was a protest, a couple of Labour youth party members (yes, there are some apparently,) the snivelling young Limp Dims, and also those who had absolutely no interest in going on the march and just wanted a cheap ticket to London for the day.

Living The Change

December 1st 2006 | Posted by Chris Palmer

It is now almost a year since David Cameron was resoundingly elected as leader of the Conservative party in a popular vote by the grassroots membership. In his time as leader he has implemented many wide ranging reforms and changes, placing green issues and social justice at the heart of his policy outlook in a bid to once again make the Conservatives electable and ready the party for Government.

The youth and student wing of the party, Conservative Future, has also been undergoing extensive changes and improvements. The organisation has always been the most popular political grouping on University campuses in Britain with thousands of friendly, enthusiastic and active members, and continues to grow and expand every year.

If you are interested in politics and meeting new people and want to get behind David Cameron, live the change he is advocating and help to make this country a better place for everyone, then join Bath Conservative Future; Bath University’s best student political society.
